What we get to love…
In this episode, recorded under a blanket, we meet the putrid, mysterious, seductive, and star-studded skunk cabbage from Catherine Owen Koning and Sharon M. Ashworth's WADING RIGHT IN. We learn how sentences of clarity, authority, and service can generate reverence. We learn what it takes to fall in love with a wetland, or any place we may have been taught to overlook.
I’m Becky Karush, producer and host of READ TO ME. Meet me over here.
Great writing, your great writing, rises from two actions, each done in safety.
LISTENING. We listen to brilliant writing. As Suzanne Kingsbury, founder of the Gateless Writing method, says, “Writing well is actually an act of listening, and listening to others helps us hone that skill.”
MIRRORING. Looking for what’s powerful and beautiful in others’ work cultivates our own capacity for masterful craft. We listen for and mirror back what’s original and riveting, not what we think is broken.
The cult of the critic, that which destroys the work to “build it back up,” is usually more about exerting control than tapping your most potent work. Your creativity isn’t cancer. It doesn’t need chemo and scalpels to kill what’s bad. It needs room and tools and discernment to grow what’s good.
READ TO ME is a tender, tough-minded, funny space to listen for power and beauty & mirror it back. It is a path to excellence on the page, by way of love.
